Osoyoos Larose 2020

Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaOsoyoos Larose is firmly under the direction of Groupe Taillan in Bordeaux, which not only suits its styling but reflects a wine that has been intelligently planned, planted and made since 2001. The 2020 vintage was unique. The spring was cool and wet, with bud break slightly later than previous vintages. Spring gave way to a warm and dry July, August, and September. The long, warm autumn helped the crop ripen perfectly under acid-retaining cool nights. The harvest began October 1 with merlot and was completed on the 19th with petit verdot. The 2020 is a 66/15/9/8/3 blend of merlot, cabernet sauvignon, petit verdot, malbec, and cabernet franc. The blocks are handpicked and fermented in custom conical tanks for 25 days. Ageing is a 12 month process in a 30-30-30 split of new, one-year-old, and two-year-old French oak barrels. I feel increasingly more tannins in Osoyoos since 2019. The incremental change comes with denser, sweeter, more refined tannins contributing to a longer, fuller life in the bottle. Power meets elegance in 2020 with black fruit, cedar, toasted oak, and a dusting of savoury south Okanagan sagebrush. No rush here.
