Château d'Yquem 1989

Sauternes, Graves, Bordeaux, FranceMore like the 1990, 2003 and 2005 with its dry warm summers. There were high temperatures "and big water problems in the soil to feed the roots". All great vintages are dry and hot according to Lurton. They '89 nose is slightly volatile with warm orange peels and plenty of exotic fruit flavours. Lacks the usual finesse but it comes with super rich, fat fruit flavours. An exceptional year in which 25 per cent of the fruit was lost in July to hail storms. Stylish and deep gold in colour with sweet crystallized and also roasted fruit aromas and flavours. Needs more time. Bottled with 127 grams per litre of sugar with an acidity of 4.0 grams per litre and 13.2 alcohol ― a good level for d'Yquem. Picking began in 25 September finished in 25 October.Tasted: 15 May 2008Tasted by: Anthony Gismondi and Stuart TobePrices:
