Penfolds Grange Hermitage Bin 95 Shiraz 1997

South Australia, AustraliaThe colour is incredible but because its caught in the middle of the great '96 and '98, it is not considered to be on the 'A' team - even if it will press for a while. Even so don't let anyone talk you out of skipping the '97 in favour of the 1996 or 1998. The 1997 contains a splash (five per cent) of cabernet sauvignon and spends some four to five days on the skins fermenting before it is finished off in the barrel. The nose is huge offering blueberry, mulberry and blackberry aromas mixed with vanilla, licorice, sweaty leather, prune and marmalade. Rich and round with good concentration and moderate tannins it has a somewhat tight, tannic finish. Intense creamy, vanilla, cherry cola, peppery, smoky, blackberry, raspberry flavours lead to a long spicy, blackberry, peppery, tannic finish. Excellent quality that will flesh out and be fun to drink over the next decade while you wait for the mammoth 1998.Tasted: 01 March 2000Tasted by: Anthony Gismondi and Stuart TobePrices:
