Penfolds Grange Hermitage Bin 95 Shiraz 1996

South Australia, AustraliaGrange has always been more of an icon and less strictly speaking a textbook shiraz. There is six percent Coonawarra fruit in the '96 along with what Penfolds describes as "a lot of decisions" that are made in the vineyard. Production ranges from 5-8,000 cases and in 1996, supplies were at the higher end. But this is a great Grange. Look for very open tobacco, menthol, vanilla, ripe black currant aromas with a strong spicy, cherry jam background, immensely appealing. The palate is intense and ripe with very ripe but ample tannins. Huge blackberry, cassis jam and cherry fruit explode with spicy, peppery vanilla flavours and a long creamy, tobacco, toffee, coffee finish. Very unctuous and one for a true lover of intensity in a wine but with balance. Tasted: 01 March 1999Tasted by: Anthony Gismondi and Stuart TobePrices:
