Rodney Strong Cabernet Sauvignon 2021
Sonoma County, California, United StatesRodney Strong recognized in the late 1960s that Sonoma County’s Alexander Valley was an exceptional area for heat loving cabernet sauvignon. He planted Alexander’s Crown, his first cabernet vineyard, in 1971, on a small hill in Jimtown, and the reputation for refined, Sonoma County cab has never looked back. Winemaker Olivia Wright worked with a very good 2021 vintage with no frost and mild temperatures throughout most of the year, one of the driest seasons on record. The result was an earlier than average harvest with approximately 15% lower yields and a more pronounced concentration of flavours. Look for an attractive nose of dark cherry, plum, florals and baking spice. The palate is pleasantly more defined as a cabernet with linear black fruit and firmer, fine grained tannins with toasted oak. The final product came in at 14.5% alcohol with bright acidity, and a savoury Sonoma underside. This spends only a 6 month stint in 25% new French oak barrels.
