Rodney Strong Cabernet Sauvignon 2017
Sonoma County, California, United StatesRodney Strong planted his first cabernet sauvignon in 1971, Alexander’s Crown, on a small hill in Jimtown. Today there are three vineyards, from Jimtown to Geyserville and all the way north to Cloverdale. The soils are a mix of well-drained alluvial, volcanic, and uplifted shale/sandstone soils that cabernet seems to love. 2017 was as up and down weatherwise as they go, with massive spring rains followed by six separate heat waves, including a 110 F Labour Day. All said this is very impressive straight up cabernet sauvignon with fresh plummy, violet fruit, a dash of spice, and a dry finish. A perfect pour for those looking to grasp the style of a balanced California cabernet. Grilled steak is the call, but vegetarians could serve this with grilled root vegetables. The wine spends 16 months in French oak, 20 percent new.Tasted: 14 January 2020Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:BC | $26.99 | 750ml | BCLS |
