CheckMate Artisanal Winery Knight's Challenge Chardonnay Sunset Vineyard 2021

Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaKnight's Challenge is a contemporary chardonnay from Sunset Vineyard on the Black Sage Bench. It appears to be a single vineyard site, but differing elevations and east/west row orientations give it much more diversity. The vineyard has numerous aspects that affect the wine's personality as much as its 30 year old Dijon clones (76 and 95). The magic is mixing the powerful, fully ripe chardonnay fruit (late-day sun) with the cooler, high-acid fruit from the lower rows. It is all wild fermented and barrel-aged (64% new French oak). It opens with peach blossoms, vanilla beans, some barrel sweetness, and a light dusting of sagebrush and spice. The palate is similar with honeyed melon fruit, almonds, and like last year, with a cleansing saline note at the finish. It is a wine for chardonnay enthusiasts with a taste for the exotic.Tasted: 08 March 2024Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
