Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle 2013
Hermitage, Northern Rhone, Rhone Valley, FranceIt was Gaspard de Stérimberg who built the now famous chapel on the top of hill of Hermitage in 1224. It was purchased by the Jaboulet family in 1919 and has been the name of their signature shiraz ever since. The vines are a minimum 40 years old, many are 60+, all over granite and limestone soils, and since 2006, farmed biodynamically. Only 20 percent new oak is used by winemaker Caroline Frey and the style is moving decidedly away from pure power to more finesse. The yields were crazy low in 2013 averaging somewhere in between 10 and 18 hl/ha. Mineral, floral, meaty aromas swirl above its inky colour. The texture is silky, the concentration medium, the red/black fruit bright, mineral and persistent. It’s going to be very good if not great and ready to drink by 2020.
