Antinori Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino 2007

Montalcino, Siena, Tuscany, ItalyA mild spring and a warm year produced a richer Brunello than we have seen in a while. Pian is aged in 3000 to 8000 litre oak casks for more than two years before bottling. Its clay over limestone soils sit at 130 and 200 meters above sea level and are riddled with small stones. Fruit and spice are the hallmark of this wine on the nose with bits of floral, eucalyptus notes and black cherry, plum, liquorice and vanilla aromas. The attack is rich yet elegant with well-proportioned fine-grained tannins. The palate is awash in plums, red liquorice, vanilla, mineral, chocolate orange peel flavours. This wine is always a little less powerful than its peers but that can be a good thing. This will repay five years cellaring. Tasted: 10 March 2013Tasted by: Anthony Gismondi and Stuart TobePrices:
