Penfolds St. Henri Shiraz 1999

South Australia, AustraliaSt. Henri is an elegant, multi-district shiraz that is based on Barossa fruit. Since its original 1957 release St Henri has lived in the shadows of the bigger Penfolds red but throughout the last decade it has begun to regain respect for its purity of fruit and style - there is no new oak used here. Open savoury/spicy/peppery, rootsy, black cherry nose with a touch of eucalyptus. Rich round, fine grained tannins with big menthol, black raspberry fruit and sausage meat, tobacco flavours. There's 10 per cent cabernet in the mix for stability and lends some grip. Has improved in the last year in bottle.Tasted: 18 April 2004Tasted by: Anthony Gismondi and Stuart TobePrices:
