Antinori Solaia 1989

Tuscany, ItalyThe Solaia vineyard lies alongside the Tignanello plot in the heart of Antinori's Santa Christina Estate. A cabernet site it provides the guts of the 1989 Solaia, a wine made from 60 cabernet sauvignon, 20 cabernet franc and 20 percent sangiovese. Antinori believes the personality and certainly the aging potential of Solaia comes from the cabernet while he credits its finesse and elegance to the sangiovese. Aging takes place over 2 years in 225 litre oak barrels followed by a further year in bottle. Many consider the 1989 Solaia to be the wine of the vintage in Tuscany although its accessibility now reveals the somewhat light nature of the vintage. Much like a big Brunello Solaia normally works well with grilled meats, venison and powerful cheeses.Tasted: 01 March 1994Tasted by: Stuart TobePrices:
