Rodney Strong Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2017

Alexander Valley, Sonoma County, California, United StatesThis wine is just beginning to reach its zenith at seven years of age. It has lost any baby fat to a rush of spicy red fruit and florals before spilling onto the palate with more of the same, giving this wine some exciting mid-palate vibrancy. The finish is smooth with balsamic and dried herbs. As mentioned, it is perfect now and will likely remain on this plateau through 2027. A rack of lamb seems a good fit, or a veal shank osso buco with olives and mango. The RS Reserves are made in the Artisan winery. Techniques such as cluster pre-sorting, berry sorting, cold soaking, extended maceration, and a free run only protocol match up with tanks and equipment sized for the exacting vineyard selection process. The 2017 Reserve Cab came from select areas within each vineyard, which are hand harvested and fermented separately, and only the best lots of that make it to the final blend to spend 24 months in wood before bottling. In the end, the fruit selection involved 52% Alexander Valley, and 48% Sonoma County grapes broken down as Cooley Ranch, Brothers, Rockaway, and Crown vineyards.Tasted: 16 August 2024Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
