Yalumba Viognier The Virgilius Eden Valley 2019

Eden Valley, South Australia, AustraliaThe Virgilius is the flagship white at Yalumba and the pinnacle of the long running and highly successful viognier project at Yalumba. With the support of the Hill-Smith family, winemaker Louisa Rose and the Yalumba team could be credited with saving the viognier variety from global extinction. There wasn't much left in France's northern Rhone region when Yalumba started exploring its ability to grow in the Eden Valley in the early 1980s. Over time some newer clones have been planted to expand the family, and the selection for winemaker Louisa Rose. Rose's touch has been masterful, gently extracting all required to be viognier without going over the top into the heavily perfumed, oily range. Almost all barrel selection is matured 11 months in older French oak barriques, puncheons and demi-muids. Over time Yalumba has mastered the art of picking viognier at the exact moment of ripeness, in what can be a concise window. Fragrant and bright, the fruit dances along your palate, stopping to release some citrus, apricots, and white pepper, followed by a mineral, stony, almond finish. More ethereal than any other label, it is sure to be the standard for viognier for many decades.Tasted: 15 October 2022Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
