Burrowing Owl Athene 2019

Oliver, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe 19 Athene is a 52/48 syrah/cabernet sauvignon from the Black Sage Bench. It's not quite up to the French oak Ipso Facto in texture, but this is another fine rendition of the classic Australian blend. BC syrah can be a mouthful, and in 2019 it left a significant impression on this wine. The grapes are cofermented and barrel aged for 18 months in a mix of French, American, and Hungarian wood (33% new). On the nose, you get an instant hit of syrah with its violets and pepper. There are some slightly sticky tannins in the finish, but nothing that will stop you from drinking it now through 2025. Vegetarians will like the winery's suggestion of serving this with a grilled portobello mushroom dish.Tasted: 17 August 2022Tasted by: Prices:
