Burrowing Owl Athene 2012
Oliver, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaAthene (a-THEE-nee) takes its name from the biological genus of the Burrowing Owl Athene cunicularia. The fruit, syrah and cabernet sauvignon are co-fermented and then aged for 21 months in a mix of French, American and Hungarian oak is all off Oliver's Black Sage Bench. The nose opens with black pepper, black berry, cedar, licorice and light balsamic, smoky oak, vanilla, savoury, clove and leather aromas. Dry, tight, entry with light, grainy tannins. Coffee, chocolate, clove, gingerbread, cassis, resin, licorice, rooty, pruny flavours. Solid balance with some strong oak and black tea tannins to integrate over the next few years.
