M. Chapoutier Hermitage Chante Alouette Blanc 2017

Southern Rhone, Rhone Valley, FranceChante-Alouette is one-third vat fermented in large 600-litre oak barrels, and the rest is fermented in stainless steel. The fruit comes off three select sites: Le Méal, an old fluvioglacial alluvial deposit; granitic and alluvial Les Murets; and Chante-Alouette, set on loess soil with a fine layer of clay and limestone. It yields a complex marsanne. The attack is rich and powerful with expressive pear, lemon, and bitter orange notes of bergamot. The palate is long and persistent with ripe peach, butter, and almonds that linger forever. The fruit is farmed biodynamically, and this wine can be aged for decades. A top-flight wine at a bargain price; serve with robust white meat dishes or cheeses. Real wine. The highly sought after appellation of Hermitage is named after the tiny chapel at its highest point, once home to hermits and later used by bird hunters, like Michel Chapoutier’s grandfather. Alouette is a kind of bird. Chante Alouette means Sing Alouette.Tasted: 16 October 2019Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
