Chenin does special things with age, transforming pear and grapefruit and light honey blossoms into concentrated quince, green fig and heady honeysuckle notes. This 2013 is just hinting at maturity, with dried herbs, honey and dried quince framing the bright orchard fruit. Medicinal-edged tropical fruit, perhaps a result of the sauvignon blanc splashed in, stunts the finish. Chenin's piercing acidity drives throughout, lingering on the palate. Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThese chenin vines, nearing 20 years of age, are planted on the winery’s sloping estate soils, rich in volcanic rock and glacial till. A splash of sauvignon blanc ups the herbal citrus acidity ante. Alluring aromas of honey, grapefruit, flint, stone and light lees lead to a creamy palate of herbal meadow flowers, honeycomb, wild grass and tangerine pith, lifted with vibrant acidity and ending with lingering mineral spice on the lengthy finish. Quails' Gate Chenin Blanc 2013

Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaI'm excited about the new Quails' Gate as it moves away from the good but austere style of winemaker Grant Stanley for the more approachable under new winemaker Nicky Callaway (ex-Mission Hill). The latest chenin has swapped the sweaty grapefruit and bitter finish for more citrus and tropical fruit all in a dry style. The palate is lively with notes of stony minerality and fresh green apple. The winery recommends it with a chilled seafood platter and we concur. It is a perfect match. The blend is 91/9 chenin blanc / sauvignon blanc that is fermented 85/15 in stainless steel tanks and 2 year-old French barrels. Bravo.Tasted: 20 July 2014Tasted by: Prices:
