Penfolds Yattarna Bin 144 Chardonnay 1999

Adelaide Hills, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide, South Australia, AustraliaThe '99 Yattarna (the fifth edition) is made from hand-picked fruit grown at Fleurieu, Piccadilly and Adelaide Hills. The whole-cluster grapes are pressed and gently run off into French oak barrels (80 percent of which are new) to be barrel fermented and left on the lees for ten months. The entire wine goes through malolactic fermentation but there is zero filtration at bottling. There's nothing traditional about this Oz chardonnay that is made with the coolest most marginal fruit the winemakers can lay their hands on. Creamy, toasty lees, vanilla, and honey aromas are the nose with plenty of citrus melon, mango flavours in the mouth. Elegant yet powerful and simply a delight to sip with food.Tasted: 01 September 2002Tasted by: Anthony Gismondi and Stuart TobePrices:
