Penfolds Yattarna Bin 144 Chardonnay 1998

Adelaide Hills, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide, South Australia, AustraliaWhile hardly pale its medium yellow green colour is the lightest yet for Yattarna whose grapes are handpicked and gently whole-cluster pressed. The juice is immediately run off into oak barrels (83 percent of which are new) to be barrel fermented and left on its lees for nine months. Battonage is performed regularly although as time passes the barrel is stirred less and less. There is zero filtration. There's nothing about Yattarna that suggests this is traditional Oz chardonnay but rather something much more elegant and yet forceful. Creamy, toasty lees, vanilla, and honey aromas predominate on the nose. Yattarna has the propensity to age and you sense it when you taste its citrus flavours with melon, mango honeyed -apple tones and you feel its Burgundian weight, roundness and fresh acidity. Yattarna like Grange is made only from the finest ingredients. The '98 blends fruit from Tumbarumba NSW, Drumborg, Victoria and Adelaide Hills and McLaren Vale. Only 1200 cases made.Tasted: 01 September 2001Tasted by: Anthony Gismondi and Stuart TobePrices:
