Penfolds Cabernet Shiraz Bin 389 1998

South Australia, AustraliaPenfolds is trying to raise the cabernet portion of this wine into the 60 to 65 percent range but the '98 still contains 42 percent shiraz. Look for a dark, brooding nearly opaque colour and aromas of mint, damson plums, blackberry jam and black olives with just a wisp of mocha. An appealing sweet vanilla oak scent pulls your nose into the glass where you discover the Grange character sans the price or the searing intensity although you could argue the 1998 is as close as it gets. Very rich and intense, the palate adds even more of a coffee, smoky, pepper experience with cassis and blackberry jam and mint, you name it, it's all here. A blockbuster bottle. Even more amazing is the 120,000 case production of 389. Take a bow Penfolds.Tasted: 01 March 2001Tasted by: Anthony Gismondi and Stuart TobePrices:
