Frescobaldi Castelgiocondo Lamaione Merlot 2014
Tuscany, ItalyThe 12-hectare Lamaione site is known for its robust Tuscan merlot thanks to its southwest exposition, high-density planting, and heavy clay subsoil loaded with limestone and mineral elements. Add a warming planet and increasingly drier growing seasons, and we can expect the concentration to continue. Lamaione has been produced since 1991 on the Castelgiocondo estate in Montalcino, in vineyards about 300 meters above sea level. The merlot spends at least 30 days on skins before ageing 24 months in 90% new French barriques. A final year in bottle ensures the wine is ready for release when it reaches the market. I love this wine's consistency and complexity with its rich, fleshy, mix of black and red fruits and subtle streaks of tobacco, leather, mushrooms, espresso, and savoury ripe olives. Mushroom risotto and Bistecca alla Fiorentina are suitable matches, or an aged piece of pecorino for the purist experience.Tasted: 07 November 2024Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:BC | $75.00 | 750ml | select private retailers |
