Nichol Vineyard Old Vines Syrah 2021

Naramata Bench, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThis is the oldest syrah in Canada, planted own-rooted in 1990/91 on granite bedrock at the end of the Naramata Bench, Nichol's home site. This was destemmed and fermented on skins in large open top fermenters before being basket pressed to neutral 500L French puncheons. It remained there until bottling, unfined and unfiltered. Wild blackberry, dark cherry, thorns, crushed violets course through this savoury red, with a crushed stony underlay, and framework of long, finely grippy tannins. There's a grippy granitic energy and acidity holding this taut, and streaming it to a lingering cracked pepper finish. Such a beaut, and one that will reward with cellaring.Tasted: 24 June 2023Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
