Losing the sun early in the afternoon leads to cooler, more exotic syrah with tighter notes of black tea, black cherries, white pepper, over a round structure. The palate is more of the same with medium density, black raspberry, and a streak of licorice and sagebrush, all with some refinement and a long, silky, floral finish wrapped in minerals. Golden Mile Bench, Oliver, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe orange wax evokes the early sunrise from the Golden Mile Bench. The wine comes from South Rock Vineyard, at its southern edge, on gravelly clay and eroded mountain rock. It's the most tightly wound of the four at this stage, with firm grained tannins and a dense dark cherry and raspberry core that's just beginning to unwind. Golden Mile Bench, Oliver, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe smartly orange waxed Golden Mile Bench Syrah is one of a quad of single vineyard Syrahs released by Rust in the 2020 vintage. Each of the four is from clone 877 and aged similarly so that you can compare site and soil. This is off South Rock Vineyard's gravelled clays and older vines (planted 2002) at 300m. This was a 25% whole cluster fermented and aged in a mix of French and Hungarian oak for 18 months (33% new). Perfumed black cherry, Assam tea, and fragrant iris moves along the medium+, lively palate. Tannins are smooth and sculpted, guiding this to a lightly peppery end.
