Apalta Valley, Santa Cruz, Valle del Colchagua, Valle del Rapel, Region del Valle Central, ChileMontes Folly’s high density vines grow on the steep hillsides of the Finca de Apalta home estate, over the thin granite soils eroded from the mountain chain above angular stones and some clay. Another dry winter has led to low yields and intense wines. Opaque and ripe, it pitches toasted oak, coffee, blueberries, tapenade, and dark chocolate with a touch of reduction for now. This needs time in the bottle, perhaps as much as five years before it blossoms and sheds some of the 80 percent new French oak it aged in for 18 months.
