CedarCreek Platinum Block 3 Riesling 2018

Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaLuminous pale gold in the glass, this riesling from CedarCreek's Platinum series has a wonderfully expressive nose of that starts with orange blossoms and lime curd, moves to lemony petrol whiffs, then hits a few peachy notes with a dotting of herbs and crushed stones. A complex earthy mushroom-y element is evident, which I attribute to a minuscule inclusion of botrytis-affected fruit in the 2018 edition. Eye-popping acidity initiates a surge of citrus, peach, green apple flavours that roll around the mouth and peak in a prolonged, fruit drenched, electrifying finish that is fruity/savoury/herbal/stony. A modicum of residual sugar seamlessly balances this riesling to virtual dryness. A little belly fat from half a year of lees ageing adds luscious succulence, and don't forget to keep swirling and smelling the wine until toasted and honey aromas emerge as it gains a little air. Each year this is unfailingly one of BC's finest rieslings, the late pick of a single block of 20-year old vines, wildly fermented in steel with a small oak component. Dewy-fresh and bright yet rich and concentrated, this is magnificently adaptable wine for pairng with smokey grilled pork chops, teriyaki salmon or spring pea risotto. The cooler vintage has sharpened it wonderfully and there is no rush to drink now., except that it's so utterly delicious and life-renewing (as only riesling can be), there is no good reason to wait.Tasted: 17 April 2020Tasted by: Prices:
