Painted Rock Red Icon 2015

Skaha Bench, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThis big, compact wine needs to breathe, so give it time to air. Dusky dark cherries, ripe black raspberries, smoked stones, black earth, roasted root veg, dried violet leaves, heaps of cracked pepper all chug slow along the palate, drawn by thick, wood-streaked tannins and seasoned with baking spices and walnut shells. Merlot, cabernet franc, malbec, petit verdot, cabernet sauvignon was aged for 18 months in French oak (30 percent new) and it feels it at this point. There is certainly integration, like the beginning glimpses of a puzzle coming together, but at this stage, the oversized pieces (fruit, oak, tannin, spice) all stick out. Decant, fire up the grill and throw on the lamb. Or better yet, lay down for a few years and then attempt.Tasted: 09 March 2018Tasted by: Prices:
