Harlan Estate Red 2010

Napa Valley, California, United StatesThis is one plush red wine although you could argue it’s as lean as it gets for Harlan which undoubtedly helps its overall balance and weight. The nose is awash in black fruit and licorice with flecks of espresso and dried herbs. The textures are pure silk and seamless with ample fine-grained tannins all supporting a rich, black fruit flavour profile with bits of tobacco and black olive in the finish. A giant of a wine but with more restraint than you might expect. Drink from 2018 through 2030. The wine has a very high percentage cabernet sauvignon in it but the vineyard is planted to 70% cabernet sauvignon, 20% merlot, 8% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot; estate production is set at about 2000 cases.
