Peter Lehmann Mentor 1996

Barossa Valley, South Australia, AustraliaMentor is Peter Lehmann's Flagship cabernet sauvignon of the vintage. Each year, blind tastings on the bench involving the entire winemaking team are the method behind the selection of the best cabernet which is then blended with other red grapes to round out the bottle. Fruit for the Mentor is sourced from old, dry farmed vines in the Barossa Valley. In terms of 1996, the mix was 66/20/10/10 cabernet sauvignon, merlot, shiraz and malbec that hailed from various Barossa sites namely The Stonewell, Ebenezer and Light Pass Districts. In those days the alcohol was a very moderate 13.5 percent and while this wine is ready to drink it is on the downside of its career. There still a spicy, peppery undertone with liquorice notes but there's more earth than fruit in the finish. Perfect for simply prepared lamb or beef dishes.
