Penfolds Shiraz Kalimna Bin 28 2001

South Australia, AustraliaKalimna is a multi-region blend primarily sourced from the Barossa and Clare Valleys, McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek regions. Oz wine writing wizard James Halliday says "there is a good argument to be made that it should be Bin 28, rather than Bin 389, which is 'Poor Man's Grange'" because "the emphasis is on the same lush fruit; the oak used is second - and third - use American barrels handed down through the Grange and Bin 389 programmes." In 2001 look for expressive spicy, white pepper, smoky bacon, licorice, black berry jam aromas with a touch of black raspberry fruit. A rich, ripe, smooth entry with chocolate, sweet vanilla, peppery, black cherry jam and some smoky, meaty notes on the finish. A touch of acidity and some alcoholic notes but otherwise well-balanced and full flavoured. Youthful to say the least.Tasted: 16 February 2004Tasted by: Anthony Gismondi and Stuart TobePrices:
