Mission Hill Quatrain 2022
Osoyoos, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaQuatrain has been tweaked for several years since winemaker John Simes departed just over a decade ago. The goal was to give it an identity distinct from the myriad of Meritage wines on the market by increasing the syrah content. The '22 blend is a 40/33/13/13 mix of syrah, merlot, cabernet franc, and cabernet sauvignon, with grapes sourced from Osoyoos East, Black Sage, and Osoyoos West in a 79/9/2 mix. It is fermented in small, specially designed French oak fermenters and aged 19 months in French oak. In the end, Quatrain has been upping its complexity and length, blending red and black fruits to give it freshness and power while letting some of the peppery, meaty, baking spice aspects of the syrah shine. Elephant Island Reserve Meritage 2021
Naramata Bench, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThis generous Bench Meritage features an 82.5/11.5/6 mix of merlot, cabernet franc, and cabernet sauvignon, packed with plump candied cherry, dried herbs, and a lot of cigar box spice. Again, the alcohol is over 15 percent when it probably doesn't need to be, not that there isn't a market for big, rich reds, but it subtly has its moments too. The tannins are dense and well-managed, and you can drink this wine now or wait for it to mature further in the bottle through 2028. The fruit comes from four estate vineyards, and the final blend is a barrel selection of the best lots. The '21 blend is 34/23/21/11/11 merlot, cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon, malbec and petit verdot. It is all fermented in concrete before ageing in French oak for 18 months. There is a beautiful wild fragrance here, and with a substantial reduction in cabernet sauvignon from the previous vintage, the wine is already singing in the glass. Osoyoos Larose 2022
Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaI previewed the 2022 Osoyoos Larose Grand Vin last fall, well ahead of its expected release in the fall of 2026. Like almost every release since 2001, it displays potential well beyond that first glimpse. I caught up with the 2022 last week, and it is already beginning to wow this taster. In fact, I think I said wow three times when I first nosed it. Osoyoos Larose is owned and produced by Groupe Taillan from Bordeaux. Raphael Merlaut, a family member, was in BC to meet his on-site General Manager and Winemaker Michael Kullmann, during one of several tastings to determine when it will be released. There is a large team behind this wine, including a renowned Bordeaux consultant, Éric Boissenot, who collaborates to make a wine that leans toward structure, restraint, ageability and a sense of place, namely the Osoyoos Bench in the South Okanagan. The vineyard has undergone extensive renovations to address the implications of winter damage in 2023 and 2024. Amidst all that, they have produced a gem of a Grand Vin in 2022. The new bottle/package includes a label change, a move to Diam corks to prevent cork taint, and a wax-dipped bottle to support sustainability through aluminum capsules and provide better control of oxygen ingress as the wine ages in the bottle. The blend is merlot dominant, but they have increased the amount of Cabernet Sauvignon (because they can fully ripen it now) to improve the structure. The nose is near perfect, awash in a fragrant perfume of red and black cherries and plums that spreads across a silky palate streaked with savoury desert scrub. A strong backbone, ample acidity, and perfect balance point to the potential for endless aging. In fact, Osoyoos Larose has always had a reputation as one of the best wines to cellar in Canada, and the '22 will be the latest example. The 2022 vintage also marks a major milestone as the first year the vineyard was certified Organic by PACS. The grapes grow on an 80 acre bench, divided into over 30 distinct blocks. Domaine de Colette Tradition Morgon 2023
Morgon, Beaujolais Villages, Beaujolais, Burgundy, FranceThis domaine is new to me, but I'm impressed. Based in Lantignié and run by Jacky Gauthier and his son Pierre-Alexandre, the estate is organically farmed. This Morgon comes off 50 year old vines planted on schist, with fruit hand picked, sorted, and whole bunch fermented, then matured for eight months in concrete. It's a classic expression of the cru: structured and mineral, with sappy black cherry, raspberry, and spice. Thibault Ducroux En Roue Libre 2024
Beaujolais, Burgundy, FranceThibault Ducroux grew up in a winemaking family in Bojo but was inspired towards natural wines through reading Jules Chauvet. After working with some natural winemakers in Bojo and Jura, he began his winery with 1.25ha owned vines and 6.5ha total via long-term contracts, all organically farmed and in conversion. This was the wine he made, in 2019, and called En Roue Libre, 'Freewheeling,' referencing his non-intervention winemaking and his love of cycling (he used to race in a club). From 40 year old vines in silty clays, this was whole bunch carbo, native fermented, and aged in concrete for eight months with no fining, filtration and the bare minimum of sulphur at bottling. Fragrant raspberry, cherry blossoms, scrubby, sapid herbs are woven throughout this lighter red, sharpened with lofted acidity, wrapped with long, fine tannins, and dusted with pink peppercorn. Beamsville Bench, Niagara Peninsula, Ontario, CanadaOff their estate Cave Spring Vineyard (CSV) on a hillside of the Niagara Escarpment, on stony clay loams, this gamay was 25% whole cluster / 75% destemmed (with 30% stem return) foot crushed and native fermented before heading to barrel for 20 months in a mix of 225L and 500L barrels. It was bottled unfiltered. Dark plum, boysenberry, wild blackberry fill this darker shaded gamay, with darts of VA aiding the lifted acidity. Beamsville Bench, Niagara Peninsula, Ontario, CanadaFrom their estate Cave Spring Vineyard, on a limestone-clay sloping terrace overlooking Lake Ontario, this gamay is tipped with 5% pinot noir. After a month long whole berry maceration and native ferment, this aged 1 year in a mix of neutral 225L and 500L oak barrels before bottling, unfiltered. Fragrant raspberry, wild cherry is seasoned and structured with integrated oak, with lingering toast and a bitter cherry note on the finish. Cawston, Similkameen Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe Rust gamay hails from South Cawston's Lazy River Vineyard in the Similkameen Valley. The vines (clone 509) were planted 30 years ago on sand, clay loams, and granite. The style is refreshingly light and bright, with forward plum and rhubarb, and a wash of spice and minerality. As our gamay expert, Treve Ring, said last time out, there is a 'green tobacco and buzzy, crunchy cranberry palate' that, in my opinion, places it in Beaujolais country. Oliver, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe 2025 Jagged Rock Gamay does 'Stand Apart' from many wines, including the classic renditions of Beaujolais, the home of Gamay. That said, it opens with an inviting mix of soft, round, spicy dark red fruit, suggesting it is more of a Cru-style Gamay, albeit with some Merlot richness and weight. We are big fans of the Jagged Rock Vineyard, which has produced amazing and diverse wines, switching effortlessly between red and white. Expect a round, dense, sweet, red, spicy black fruit entry with a plummy, peppery underside and a stony mineral finish. Tuscany, ItalyPetresco is the Cincioles flagship sangiovese, made from a single high-altitude block at 470 metres in Panzano's famed Conca d'Oro. It is organically farmed, fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged for 24 months in a combination of large French oak casks and smaller barriques before getting extended bottle ageing. Precise and fragrant, this Tuscan red is a masterclass in Sangiovese, with wild red-fruit flavours, mushroom undertones, and an earthy, mineral finish. Tuscany, ItalyTommasi has 110+ years experience growing cabernet sauvignon in central Toscana, and that tradition continues here in Maremma, in Toscana's southwest corner. This 60/40 mix of sangiovese / cabernet sauvignon comes off the Pitigliano estate, with soils rich in calcium carbonate tufa, and remains the flagship of the estate. This is fermented in stainless before fermenting and aging 1 year in large 65hL Slavonian casks. The bright tart cherry, tomato leaf of the sangiovese is bolstered by a graphite structural framework, courtesy of the cabernet. They are renown for their high altitude vineyards (over 500 meters). This Brunello was native fermented, and aged in large Slavonian casks. Tuscany, ItalyPodere Le Cinciole is a small, highly regarded Tuscan Chianti Classico wine estate in Panzano, founded in the early 1990s by Luca and Valeria Orsini. They were in Vancouver earlier this year to present their wines to select retailers and restaurants. The 2022 is one to look for because it was a difficult year across Tuscany, and Le Cinciole decided not to make any of their top crus; whatever grapes were left ended up in the Chianti Classico, boosting its intensity and length. The style is traditionally elegant, so a hint of power has made an immediate impression on the Classico. Look for fresh acidity and fine-grained tannins that frame a core of earthy red and dark cherry fruit, finishing with a savoury Tuscan edge and a dusting of minerality. The fruit comes from two Naramata sites: Gjoa's Vineyard and Engel Vineyard. Winemaking steps include overnight skin contact, with 50% of the fruit fermented in stainless steel, and 50% is fermented in French oak (17% new), and the rest in 3rd and 4th fill barrels. Wien (Vienna), AustriaNow with a new label, this is the same Nussberg GV we've grown to love from Vienna's Hajszan-Neumann. The winery is located at the foot of the Nussberg and the district of Grinzing, with 20 hectares of certified biodynamic vineyards spread across the region's mineral-rich, weathered limestone soils. Navarra and Basque Country, SpainChardonnay is considered a mono-variety in Spain, and it is a major component of the Chivite Legardeta range, which includes chardonnay, syrah, and grenache labels. The vines grow in one of the northernmost wine growing areas on the Iberian Peninsula, in Chivite's estate vineyards at Villatuerta, Navarra, where Atlantic and continental influences combine to produce freshness, texture, and precision. We have been tasting this wine for a couple of decades, and it has never been better than it is today. Dropping weight and oak in favour of texture and acidity has made it far more interesting. The current Legardeta 2024 Chardonnay is decidedly lighter, with pear and peach, a hint of spice, and cream and lees. Yann runs the famous domaine named after him, which was started by their parents in the 1970s. After studying philosophy at university, Natacha returned to her winemaking roots but instead of opting for the easier option of working with her brother, she decided to start up on her own and in 2004 purchased her first vineyard. Natacha farms her vineyards in Saint Joseph, Crozes Hermitage, and Cornas biodynamically, and this is 1 of the 4 cuvées she produces, and the only white. 50 year old Marsanne (60%) and Roussanne vines are rooted in the Haut Chassis plain of CH. The fruit was pressed and settled over 2 days before native ferment in concrete ovoid vats and demi-muids, with full MLF. Carménère can be an exciting wine when it's ripe, but that is not a common occurrence in Chile, where it is a major grape. Inama is renowned for its carménère, and it is easy to see why when you smell the fragrant red and black fruit, supported by a mineral undertone, softish tannins, and more savoury pepper, with just a touch of youthful tannins. The wine is a delicious, peppery 70/30 blend of carménère and merlot at a modest 13.5% alcohol, making it a great food wine. The property represents Puglia in the prestigious Instituto Grandi Marche. Based on the main grape of Puglia's Castel del Monte, nero di troia (70%), with 30% montepulciano from the regions tufa and limestone soils, this was fermented in stainless over 2 weeks. The wine then rested 16 months in a mix of French oak casks, barriques, and tonneaux before a further year in the bottle before release. Ripe black cherry, cassis, worked leather are kissed with anise, and clad with sinewy tannis, gripping this muscular wine through a smoky, saline finish. Veneto, ItalyAs with other wines from the Veneto region, including Amarone, the appassimento process was utilized in here. In appassimento, a portion of the grapes harvested are placed in lofts or drying chambers for weeks or months to dehydrate and concentrate the components of the grapes. Arèles are the name for the traditional wooden or bamboo racks employed in the process. Approximately 30% of the corvina, rondinella, oseleta, and merlot grapes were dried for around 45 days.
