Champagne Doyard Vendémiaire Blanc de Blancs 1er Cru Brut NV

Côte des Blancs, Champagne, FranceThe Doyard family traces their winemaking roots in Champagne back to 1677. Maurice Doyard was the first in the family to make wine in Vertus under the Doyard label in 1927, and in 1979, Yannick Doyard took over, turning it into a focused, mineral-etched Champagne in the Côtes des Blancs. Today, Yannick’s son Guillaume is at the helm, organically farming 10 hectares of vineyards in Vertus and the Grand Cru villages of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Cramant, Oger, Avize and Aÿ. My bottle was disgorged in 2023 with 4 g/L after 60 months in the cellar. This chardonnay blends 3 years (base year 2017), and is a mix of 1er Cru and Grands Cru fruit (primarily their home village of Vertus) of 45+ year old vines, with 40% fermented in wood, and 15% MLF. Powerful and forward, with ample bread dough, toasted marshmallow, gingersnap cookie, and roasted hazelnuts along a creamy palate, with gentle mousse and a lingering spiced finish. Showing both autolysis and maillard notes, this is a richer wine for pairing with richer main dishes.Prices:

Based in the Aube, they are rightfully Pinot Noir centric, with vineyards primarily located around Urville and its kimmeridgian soils. Three generations of the family work in the winery today, and Michel was one of the first pioneers to release a Zero Dosage Champagne more than 30 years ago. They're continuing to push boundaries today, being the first to grow all 9 approved Champagne grapes, including the new hybrid Voltis. This Brut Nature is entirely Pinot Noir, stainless fermented with full MLF, and into bottle without filtration, where it spent 36 months on lees. I'm not sure of the base year but my bottle was disgorged April 2025. Grand Cellier d'Or is 1er cru chardonnay (80%) and pinot noir (20%) from vines 50+ years off their estate Les Blanche Voix vineyard and it's super chalky soils. My bottle is based on 2022, native fermented (no MLF) and aged in 228L oak barrels and foudre over 10 months before heading to bottle, and including 50% reserves from 2021 and 2020. Foxtrot Blanc de Noir Traditional Sparkling Wine 2020

Naramata Bench, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe inaugural Foxtrot sparkling wine is a stunning blanc de noirs, shimmering in the palest shade of pink and animated by a mesmerizing stream of exceptionally fine bubbles that rival some of Champagne's best. It comes from just down the road at Therapy Vineyards, where the Boyd family conceived it, and winemaker Jack Kempf crafted it. In a twist of fate, the Boyds later sold Therapy and acquired Foxtrot, reuniting with Kempf to rebuild Foxtrot from the vineyard up. It seems only fitting that this wine should become Foxtrot's first Blanc de Noir release. Fresh, energetic, and intriguingly complex, it offers an early glimpse of the exciting future taking shape at this small Naramata Bench property under Kempf's stewardship. Widely regarded as one of British Columbia's foremost chardonnay and pinot noir specialists, Kempf is bringing a clear vision to Foxtrot, and this sparkling wine is an impressive statement of intent. Already among the finest sparkling wines being produced in the province, it suggests the best is yet to come.Prices:

CedarCreek Aspect Collection Home Block Blanc de Noirs 2021

East Kelowna Slopes, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe Pinot Noir comes from Block 7 of the Home Vineyard, the coolest section below the winery on the original CedarCreek estate in South Kelowna. The 2020 vintage was a rosé, but to prevent any smoke taint in 2021, they produced a Blanc de Noirs, their second wine made using the traditional method. This vineyard segment was always considered ideal for sparkling wine. The base wine was aged in wood and concrete at the winery until the following April, then tiraged and left on its lees for 36 months. Viña Marty Goutte D'Argent Pinot Noir 2023

Valle de Leyda, Valle de San Antonio, Region de Aconcagua, ChilePascal Marty, founder of Viña Marty in Chile, worked as a winemaker at Mouton Rothschild, Opus One, and Almaviva, and he's behind this cool-climate Leyda Valley San Antonio pinot noir from Chile. The Goutte d'Argent, or 'silver drop,' is fermented with Japanese sake yeast, specifically sake yeast strains referred to as No. 7 and, more recently, No. 9, and Marty is said to have spent years negotiating access to these yeasts and claims to be the only non-Japanese winemaker granted access through Japanese sake-production connections. The key is that they are highly effective at exceptionally low temperatures (below 6°C) 6C) versus other strains of yeast. They can preserve acidity, influence lower alcohol levels, and alter texture and mouthfeel. The 2024 is fermented in stainless steel over 30-40 days at around 6°C, followed by 12 months on fine lees in stainless steel with regular stirring. The result is a very pure pinot, with a pale pink-orange colour. The texture is lightweight and silky smooth, but there is some flavour intensity and complexity here. Quiet notes of cherry, strawberry, rose petals, and subtle florals abound, with refined tannins, gentle acidity, and a perfect touch of spice. The finish is clean, if a bit short overall, and it's a very interesting start on a style that will be widely welcomed. Elegance is the word here. Looking forward to ongoing releases. Gérard Bertrand An 806 2023

Corbières, Languedoc, Sud de France, FranceWines that are affordable and fun to drink but still have something to say are not easy to make or find. At Bertrand, the 806 mix is grenache, syrah, and mourvèdre grown in the renowned Corbières region, where geological diversity, including schist, limestone, and rolled pebbles, is ancient and everywhere. The difference is the winemaking. Every bunch is hand harvested, and during fermentation, the syrah undergoes 10 to 18 days of carbonic maceration that plumps up the fruit. At the same time, the grenache and mourvèdre are destemmed and traditionally fermented. The result, aged 8 months in quality French oak, is a ripe, suave, black fruited wine with mineral limestone streaks that keep it from being flabby. The result is a silky, easy to drink red for an everyday meal. The 806 reference refers to Château de Peyrepertuse, a dramatic medieval castle perched atop a limestone ridge in the Corbières region of Aude. Good value.Prices:

Osoyoos Larose Blanc Le Grand Vin 2023

Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaOsoyoos Larose has released a second Le Grand Vin, which they describe as a product rooted in centuries-old Bordeaux tradition and applied to exceptional Canadian terroir. The 80/20 sauvignon blanc / sémillon is the first white wine to be released since the winery began in 1998. Groupe Taillan established the Osoyoos Larose estate on an 80-acre bench overlooking Lake Osoyoos in the south Okanagan Valley 28 years ago, and the project initially produced only two red wines, but by 2020 the vision expanded. A new white was planted on the valley floor in deep alluvial gravel soils over two acres. The results are exciting. Despite using young vines, the first release is bright and fresh, with lively fruit and crisp acidity. The aroma offers a mix of lemons and grapefruit that flows across the palate, cleansing with each sip. The flavours reflect the nose, with a subtle bitterness for added complexity. It's an impressive start and likely the beginning of a long series of outstanding white wines. The vintage was challenging, with no red wines produced and a 75% loss in white wines, limiting the initial release to a very small quantity. The sauvignon blanc was harvested on August 23, followed by the sémillon on August 25. The fruit was hand picked and pressed whole cluster in a basket press. The wine was mainly fermented in stainless steel, with 10% undergoing fermentation in new French oak barrels to add subtle complexity. It was then aged for eight months in stainless steel tanks to maintain its freshness and vibrancy. It appears the Blanc is destined to be as iconic as the Rouge.Prices:

Osoyoos Larose 2022

Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaI previewed the 2022 Osoyoos Larose Grand Vin last fall, well ahead of its expected release in fall 2026. As with almost every release since 2001, it shows potential far beyond that first glimpse. I caught up with the 2022 again last week, and it is already beginning to wow this taster. In fact, I think I said wow three times when I first nosed it. Osoyoos Larose is owned and produced by Groupe Taillan from Bordeaux. Raphael Merlaut, a family member, was in BC to meet his on-site General Manager and Winemaker, Michael Kullmann, during one of several tastings to determine when it will be released. There is a large team behind this wine, including renowned Bordeaux consultant Éric Boissenot, who helps craft a wine that leans towards structure, restraint, ageability, and a sense of place, namely the Osoyoos Bench in the South Okanagan. The vineyard has undergone extensive renovations to address winter damage in 2023 and 2024. Amidst all that, they have produced a gem of a Grand Vin in 2022. The new bottle/package includes a label change, a move to Diam corks to prevent cork taint, and a wax-dipped bottle to support sustainability through aluminum capsules and provide better control of oxygen ingress as the wine ages in the bottle. The blend is a 74/14/7/4/1 mix og merlot, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, petit verdot and malbec (the cabernet sauvignon has been increased to add structure now that global warming is making it easier to ripen every year). The nose is near perfect, awash in a fragrant perfume of red and black cherries and plums that spreads across a silky palate streaked with savoury desert scrub. A strong backbone, ample acidity, and perfect balance point to endless aging potential. In fact, Osoyoos Larose has long been known as one of Canada's best wines to cellar, and the '22 will be no exception. The 2022 vintage also marks a major milestone as the first year the vineyard was certified Organic by PACS. The grapes grow on an 80-acre bench, divided into over 30 distinct blocks.Prices:

Whistler Cabernet Sauvignon 2023

Barossa Valley, South Australia, AustraliaCabernet Sauvignon fans, this is a bargain you likely haven't heard of. Whistler Wines, located in Australia's famed Barossa Valley, planted their cabernet sauvignon in 1997. 26 years later, the wine is a rich, full throttle cabernet, well suited to its south-east facing slope, with a good portion of broken quartz throughout the soil profile. In the glass, it has generous, earthy red fruit streaked with dried herbs and hints of mint and chocolate. Balanced and loaded with pure red and black fruit and soft, fine grained tannins, this could be your barbecue wine for the rest of summer and fall. The native wild yeast fermentation is traditional and open top, lasting just under 4 weeks. The wine is then aged in 30% 1 year old French oak hogsheads and 60% seasoned French oak puncheons for 14 months. Drink or hold, there is no rush. Painted Rock Cabernet Franc 2023

Skaha Bench, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThis is a dense, full flavoured red with a savoury cedar undercurrent that permeates the red and black fruit palate through the finish. The tannins are dense but sweet, contributing to a refined mouthfeel and long, textural finish. I would cellar this for at least five years, then begin drinking it over another 5 to 7 years and likely beyond. 2023 is considered a challenging vintage for much of the Okanagan Valley because a winter cold snap caused significant bud damage. Those vines that were unaffected performed well. On the Skaha Bench, it seems Painted Rock escaped the worst of the damage. Summer was hot and dry, and in the end it was the earliest harvest on record. The franc is all hand picked from a single 2.15 acre block, and berry sorted. The fruit was fermented for 21 days on the skins in a tank with twice daily pumpovers, then barrel aged for 18 months in 30% new French oak.Prices:

Oliver, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe '23 Terroir Collection cabernet franc comes from the Black Sage Bench this year, and it hasn't lost a step. The climate-stressed season brought a difficult winter, warm spring, hot summer, and mild autumn, resulting in a smaller, earlier harvest. In this case, you get a concentrated New World nose of baking spice and dark fruit, with a subtle herbal undertone. The winery suggests it portrays acai berry on the palate, which translates to anything from blueberry and blackberry to black cherry skin and tart pomegranate, with a slightly earthy, cocoa-like, or bitter edge. The key point is that it is fun to drink. Technically, it is fermented in small concrete fermenters (clearly the difference between most of the competition) and aged in French oak barriques for 16 months.Prices:

That said, we think consumers desperate for something different will love it, and a white cabernet franc fits the bill. Technically, the wine is pressed off its skins on arrival at the winery to prevent any colour bleeding into the wine. After that, it is treated like a white wine, fermented cool, and aged in stainless steel. Look for an aromatic nose with lifted notes of orange and lime. CedarCreek Estate Pinot Gris 2025

South Kelowna Slopes, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe 2025 Estate Gris is grown across vineyards in Naramata, East Kelowna, and the Black Sage Bench. Rather than a single-site expression, it offers a broad portrait of the valley. It opens with aromas of fresh pear, white peach, melon, and citrus. The palate is round yet lively, balancing ripe orchard fruit with bright acidity and a subtle mineral thread. Winemaker Andrés Pizarro says the goal is to express both the grape variety and what the Okanagan Valley can offer in a clean, uncomplicated, highly drinkable style. The slight style shift adds approachability to an already well-made wine.Prices:

In 2025, 10% neutral French oak was used to add a touch of texture to what has become an island star. Ripe and forward, it has a little less electricity this year but remains a terrific bottle, with inviting lees, a marine-saline undercurrent, and purity and restraint in a just off dry style.Prices:

Hillside Heritage Series Pinot Gris 2025

Naramata Bench, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe 2025 Heritage Pinot Gris is a vibrant, complex white that looks a bit like a rosé, with its pale Provençal salmon hue. The palate is bright, with tropical citrus, a textured mid-palate with hints of vanilla, and a moderately dry, food-friendly finish. This edition blends fruit from Howe and Grandflora Vineyards on the Naramata Bench. It spent five months in Tokaji oak barrels and is finished clean under screwcap. This is a style I can always get behind: zero fruit salad and a touch of lees for complexity. It pairs well with seafood tacos, chopped scallop rolls, or vegetable tempura.Prices:

CedarCreek Aspect Collection Block 4 Pinot Noir 2023

East Kelowna Slopes, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaAspect Block 4 is situated on the upper slopes of CedarCreek's Home Block Vineyard. The vines are rooted in sandy loam soils that drain well and naturally restrict vigour, leading to small bunches, smaller berries, and concentrated fruit. The nose blends dark cherry, strawberry compote, and baking spice, with hints of licorice and forest floor. The palate is rich and structured, with beautiful concentration without going over the top. Black and blue fruits and savoury earth soak up the toasted oak and round the tannins. The finish is long, persistent, and mineral driven, exactly what you want in an ageable, complex single block pinot. This was harvested in four separate parts of the block independently to capture optimal ripeness. It was wild fermented and aged in concrete and French oak for 14 months. Oak ageing has been reduced by another month to nine months, further preserving site character and fruit purity. Open and attractive in its youth, this sophisticated pinot noir speaks to the North Okanagan and to the work of former winemaker Taylor Whelan, current winemaker Andrés Pizzaro, and viticulturist Kurt Simic. South Kelowna Slopes, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe 2025 vintage marks the return of Okanagan fruit and stands out as an outstanding year in the north. A warm growing season without heat spikes yielded high quality fruit with concentration, ripeness, and balance. This ideal combination allows winemaker Andrés Gálvez Pizarro to refine CedarCreek's style, reducing acidity and enhancing mid-palate weight and richness for a delightful pinot noir. Originally from Santiago, Chile, Andrés developed his passion for winemaking early, honing his skills in Chile and New Zealand before spending ten years at CedarCreek working with veterans Darryl Brooker and Taylor Whelan. Since its inception in 2000, its dark cherry, plum, and mocha immediately appeal, inviting you to explore the glass. The wine is textured and rich, with a complex, leathery, grilled herb, and forest floor finish. It typically matures for 2 years in French barriques, with half of the oak being new. While it possesses the strength characteristic of a Super Tuscan, it also showcases the freshness of high altitude vineyards at Panzano. Le Cinciole doesn't have a broad public profile like some of Tuscany's most renowned wineries, but it's quickly narrowing the gap with wines like Camalaione.Prices:

Folgorosa Tinta 2021

Lisboa, Central and Southern Portugal, PortugalFolgorosa Tinto is thought to be a blend of Alicante Bouschet, Touriga Nacional, Aragonez, and Syrah that opens with an expressive nose of wild berries, red currants, and floral and eucalyptus notes. The Quinta was founded in 1711 in Dois Portos, north of Lisbon, and the vineyard lies about 20 kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean, which explains its freshness, juicy red fruit character, bright acidity, and a reasonably supple style. This is a hamburger or flank steak red for the curious and the discerning wine crowd. Good value.Prices:

Upper Bench Altitude 2022

Naramata Bench, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaAltitude is the flagship red blend at Upper Bench, where the vines near the top of the property sit between 420 and 450 metres altitude, and about 100 metres above Okanagan Lake. The '22 blend is a mix of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, and, for the first time, petit verdot. The verdot has added both weight and texture to the blend, which still has plenty of muscle and spice. There is no rush to drink this wine. In fact, time in the bottle is required to bring the balsamic, cedar, and black fruit components together. I recommend pairing it with a big, rich, soft cheese now, or cellaring it until 2028.Prices:

Tightrope Winery Vertigo 2022

Naramata Bench, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaI liked the 2019, but I think the 2022 is even better. The Vertigo blend is an excellent illustration of how the Okanagan is experimenting freely, mapping out its future by blending barbera 50%, cabernet franc 35%, and merlot 15%, all grown sustainably on the estate at Fleet Road and Thomas Vineyards. The attack is a delicious mix of red fruits, cherries, olives, red currants dusted with liquorice, and desert scrub. It's perfectly balanced at 13.1% alcohol and a real pleasure to drink. Food is the ticket here to complete the experience. Think pasta puttanesca, wood fired pizza, or skewers of pork and red peppers.Prices:

Gérard Bertrand Château de Villemajou Grand Vin Rouge 2023

Corbières, Languedoc, Sud de France, FranceThe 2023 vintage in Corbières was marked by drought, low yields, and late season heat, but the old vines' deep roots kept them mostly unaffected. Villemajou Grand Vin carries the company's DNA, as it is the property where Gérard's father established the Bertrand legacy. Villemajou is located at Boutenac, well within the Corbières appellation. The area supports ancient, rehabilitated carignan vines now approaching 80 to 100 years old and is uniquely suited to the Mediterranean milieu of temperature, soil, and light. The final blend contains syrah, mourvèdre, and grenache. Black fruit, dusted with savoury, licorice often referred to as garrigue, sets the stage for a rich, voluptuous red that is mouthfilling without being heavy. It is the signature of a biodynamic wine that takes you into the place with little fuss.Prices:

Gérard Bertrand La Forge 2022

Corbières, Languedoc, Sud de France, FranceLa Forge is a powerful yet surprisingly refined southern French red, the kind that scares the Rhône and Bordeaux. Look for an intense nose of blackberry, black cherry, and spice, toasted with oak. The palate continues the story with ripe dark fruit, garrigue, licorice, and supple tannins, leading to a long, savoury finish. The biodynamic blend is mostly old, centenarian carignan that brings depth, freshness, and a delicious savoury complexity, with a smaller portion of old vine Syrah that completes the picture with richness and spice. A star among the serious expressions of Corbières-Boutenac, it can compete with any similar blend globally. The parcels that make up this blend emanate from the Miocene, a unique and narrow place named La Forge at Domaine de Villemajou in the Corbières region, and the Boutenac appellation.Prices:
