Champagne Marie Copinet Nos Pas dans...l'Argile Meunier Brut Nature NV
Vallée de la Marne, Champagne, FranceMarie-Laure Copinet and her winemaker husband Alexandre Kowal have taken over her family's estate, founded by her father Jacques in 1975. Before then, the Copinets were selling their fruit to Moet, but Jacques' work at Taittinger led him to decide to create their own grower champagne estate. They are based in the tiny Champagne village of Montgenost (population 140) in the Côtes des Sézanne, and they own 9 hectares of vineyards in Côtes des Sézanne, Côtes des Bar, and Vallée de la Marne, producing only 5,500 cases annually, and began organic conversion in 2018. Nos pas Dans is a series of soil / grape studies put out by Marie Copinet. In this case, this is entirely organic pinot meunier on clay, from the lieu dit of Les Ragotteries, in Cuchery, on the right bank of the Marne Valley. From the 2021 vintage this native fermented in stainless steel egg with full MLF before heading to bottle and 2 years on lees. This was disgorged in November 2025 with 0 dosage. Chiseled and crisp, with green apple, Rainier cherry, perfumed pink blossoms, and a meringue core, all seasoned with chalk dust which lingers on the finish. Montagne de Reims, Champagne, FranceMarie-Laure Copinet and her winemaker husband Alexandre Kowal have taken over her family's estate, founded by her father Jacques in 1975. Before then, the Copinets were selling their fruit to Moët, but Jacques' work at Taittinger led him to decide to create their own grower champagne estate. They are based in the tiny Champagne village of Montgenost (population 140) in the Côtes des Sézanne, and they own 9 hectares of vineyards in Côtes des Sézanne, Côtes des Bar, and Vallée de la Marne, producing only 5,500 cases annually, and began organic conversion in 2018. Complantée is a field blend of pinot noir and meunier from the plot of La Charbonnière, in the village of Brouillet, situated in the little-known Vallée de l'Ardre, east of Reims. The soils are dark and crumbly, as seen on the label. It was native fermented and vinified in large oak (60%) and stainless, and is from the 2021 vintage. It remained sur lattes until November 2025, when it was disgorged with 0 dosage. Burnished cherry, wild raspberry, lemon peel and pith is textured with chalk dust, and centred on a candied lemon meringue core. There's alluring and moreish salinity woven throughout this wine, propelling it through a lengthy textured finish. Such balance and poise here, in a seamless wine of place. Fine boned and structural, with a brace of white cherry and chalk framing cherry blossom, raspberry, lemon pith and peel, bergamot, crushed stones across a shimmering base that lingers long on the finish. Champagne Gosset Grand Millésime Brut 2016
Champagne, FranceFounded in Aÿ in 1584 by Pierre Gosset, Champagne Gosset is the oldest wine house in Champagne. For 17 generations, Gosset was family-owned, but in 1993 it was sold to the Cointreau family from Charente, owners of Frappin Cognac. The 2016, meant as a photograph of the vintage, blends 61% chardonnay and 39% pinot noir (the near reverse of 2015), with most of the pinot coming off north facing hills. As is house style, this was fermented in stainless, with no MLF. This bottle was disgorged in spring 2024. Showing some development on the nose (thanks to 7 years sur lattes), but still crisp and racy via the aforementioned winemaking choices, this streaks green apple, lemon pith, anise, and chalk dust long on the palate, seasoned subtly with toast, and finishing with a lingering lemon kiss. Côte des Blancs, Champagne, FranceFleuron, meaning flagship, was created to capture the spirit of the vintage, and represent the year. In 2019, the blend included 39% Cramant, 36% Chouilly, and 25% Cuis, highlighting the texture of the north of the Côtes des Blancs. As always, this was fermented in stainless, with full MLF. My bottle was disgorged in December 2024 with 3.5 g/L. Lemon meringue, green apple, vanilla biscuit flood the chalk lined palate, with a chalk dust framework shaping the creamy, refined mousse through a lingering saline finish. Champagne, FranceThis deeper hued rosé is a blend of 30% chardonnay, 20% Pinot Meunier, and the remaining pinot noir from 36 crus, including 15% still wine from Ambonnay, Bouzy, and Riceys. The bottling employs 30% reserve wines, and was disgorged with 9 g/L. The house believes the higher level of pinot noir will help protect from light strike, always an issue with clear glass. Pouring a deeper peach hue, this leads with strawberry brioche, and ample bread dough before a chalky and pithy tangerine brace tightens. Lovely toothsome autolysis on the suave palate, making this an easy solo sipper or welcome partner to protein canapés. Champagne, FranceThe Philipponnat family have been wine growers and merchants since the 16th century, and own 17 hectares of vineyards, all worked sustainably, with horses and no chemical inputs. Champagne Philipponnat began in 1910 when Auguste and Pierre Philipponnat established their Champagne house in its current location of Mareuil sur Aÿ. This BdN is entirely pinot noir from 1er and GCs, and was disgorged in April 2022 with 4.5 g/L. Pouring a golden lemon hue, this is chiselled with marzipan, cherry, meringue, and deep chalk layering the palate, with a long, humming line of taut lemon pith acidity drawing this to a lingering saline finish. Champagne, FranceIt's RARE that you'll find a Champagne from a bottle this ornamental. Rare used to be the prestige cuvée of Piper-Heidsieck, but now is a stand alone brand. The champagne house itself has roots dating back to 1785, when Queen Marie Antoinette tasted the House’s first cuvée. Known for its scarcity, only 14 vintages have been released since 1976. This chardonnay dominant blend (around 70% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir) sources grapes from Montagne de Reims. Lemon loaf and brioche up front, with ripe yellow apples, meringue, and lemon curd on the creamy mid, with a lingering dried fruit on the humming finish. Vallée de la Marne, Champagne, FranceMaison Henri Giraud dates back to 1628 when the Hémart family settled in Aÿ. Today the estate is run by 13th generation Emmanuelle Giraud. The cuvée Esprit Nature is made from sustainably farmed pinot noir (70%) and chardonnay (30%) from the Vallée de la Marne, vinified in oak barrels, with 50% reserve wines from a perpetual reserve. No sulphites are added at bottling. It spends 2 years on lees prior to disgorge. Toasted red and green apple, croissant, candied lemon peel is cut with a herbal sharpness, though the finish recovers with a subtle shimmering chalky vibrato. This Marsanne, from their home vineyard in Lincoln Lakeshore, is a co-ferment with 15% viognier. It was whole cluster pressed, cold settled, and racked to neutral French barriques and 1 new puncheon for native ferment and full MLF. It remained in barrel 11 months on lees with regular bâtonnage. Etna, Sicily, ItalyAmmura is the Tommasi Family Estates' Sicily project, focused on the sacred slopes of Europe's most active volcano, Etna. This Rosso is entirely Nerello Mascalese from the northeast slopes at 650m, and from vines averaging 20 years (including 2 plots of ancient vines). The fruit was destemmed and fermented in stainless over 2 weeks before being racked back to stainless for 6 months, followed by 1 year in 20 hL oak. Coastal Region, South AfricaYoung winemaker Alex Milner suddenly became very cinsault-centric when a professor told him not to bother reading the cinsault chapter in his textbook because it would be worthless to him. Fast forward from that 2011 conversation to today, and The Natte Valleij Cinsault Collective. Alex set out to find forgotten patches of older Cinsault across the Western Cape, expressing their individualities through low-interference winemaking. Coastal draws fruit from 5 dryland bush vine vineyards, ranging in age from 50-14 years. It was native fermented and aged for 12 months in a variety of concrete egg, foudre, and barrel prior to blending and bottling. Juicy raspberries, crushed cherries, suede rolls through the medium palate, with a slurry of softer, fine grained tannins and dusty baking spice seasoning, and a pointed, lifted acidity, finishing with a puff of warmth. Itata Valley, ChileNow well into its fourth generation with brothers Marco Antonio and Sebastián De Martino, De Martino was founded in 1934. Gallardía is a tribute to Itata's coastal vineyards, and the home of Chilean viticulture (with vines dating back to 1551). Sustainable agriculture, dry farming, and horse ploughing are used to farm these 35 year old own-rooted cinsault bush vines from Guarilihue, 22km inland, on gentle granite slopes. This was destemmed and native fermented in stainless, with a 40 day maceration, before 7 months aging in tank. The only additions / deletions are a small amount of SO2 at bottling. De Martino Viejas Tinajas Tinto 2024
Itata Valley, ChileThis wine really launched De Martino and Itata on the world wine map when the first vintage in 2011 was released. They found used and abandoned tinajas, handmade clay jars of varying shapes and sizes, while driving through vineyards in southern Chile and decided to try these for making wine, as their ancestors did. They have approximately 150 of these vessels in their care, averaging 150 years each. Now called Tinto, this cinsault comes from a single vineyard in coastal Itata's granite and quartz soils, planted in 1982, own-rooted and dry farmed. Most bunches are destemmed, with 40% whole bunch for a semi-carbonic native ferment in the tinajas. After 20 days or so, the wine is removed, the tinajas cleaned, and wine returned over the winter for MLF. It was bottled unfiltered and unfined. Fragrant plum, wild blackberry, boysenberry is wrapped with long, fine black tea tannis, and scented with pink peppercorn. Ventoux, Southern Rhone, Rhone Valley, FranceSilica is 90% grenache with a drop of Cinsault, all from 82-87 year old vines, Demeter certified since 2015, this is planted over sandy soil mixed with limestone, gravel, and silica. Fermentation is done in a mix of concrete eggs and concrete tanks using native yeasts, and the wine is aged 12 to 15 months in a 75/25 mix of 600L oak and a cement egg before bottling. Frederick Chaudière says the concrete eggs have enhanced the wine's salinity and floral notes, leading to silkier textures. At its base, it is still a giant grenache pitching black raspberries and white pepper, pursuing power and finesse. There is a touch of Bourgogne here, but it will need some extra time in the cellar before it is ready for prime time. Impressive and well worth investigating. If you didn't know, silicon is a natural element found in sandstone, clay, and granite, and it is plentiful in the Earth's crust. It has been recently classified as a quasi-essential, or beneficial, element for agriculture. It plays a vital part in biodynamic treatments because of its significant benefits on crops. Ventoux, Southern Rhone, Rhone Valley, FranceQuintessence Rosé was a chance to do something funkier in the rosé market, but Frédéric Chaudière says it is not an orange wine. At three years old, the label is described by Pesquié as a gastronomic rosé (translation = made for food). It is a collaboration between Olivier Poussier (Best Sommelier of the World 2000), Emmanuel Gagnepain (oenologist), and the Chaudière brothers, Fred and Alex. The blend is 70/20/30 mourvèdre, cinsault, and clairette, vinified and aged separately in concrete and barrels, with the wood-fermented wine spending six months in older oak. The impetus was the 15 year old mourvèdre that was always on the edge of ripening for reds, so they built the Rosé around it. It is more like an unctuous white. The palate is rich in the Bandol style, with hints of raisins and walnuts. Mostly unchanged since a previous tasting. No doubt it is eclectic, and finishes dry. Ventoux, Southern Rhone, Rhone Valley, FranceArtemia is one of the three red single vineyard wines at Château Pesquié that comes from two sloping sites: a grenache vineyard on a small patch of stony limestone at 400+ metres; and a syrah vineyard clinging to the hillside at 340 meters on alluvial soils. The blend is a traditional Rhône mix of 80/20 syrah/grenache that grabs your attention the instant it hits the glass. It's definitely more Northern Rhône than Southern in style, with higher acidity and a firm backbone. The garrigue-dusted black fruit, licorice, and white pepper bask in a subtle bacon scent, and it's all at a pleasant 13% alcohol. It should go to the wine cellar if you can wait. Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe 2025 blend combines Sauvignon Blanc from the Skaha Bench estate vineyard and Road 1 Vineyard in West Oliver with some Semillon from the Aspen Vineyard north of Osoyoos. Following pressing, the Sauvignon was fermented and aged in a mix of stainless steel and French oak, while the Sémillon was fermented and aged entirely in French oak. Ontario, CanadaOne of Tantalus' 2024 CIBC replacement wines, this chardonnay comes from Niagara's Mio Vineyard. The fruit was whole bunch pressed and settled for two days at Southbrook Winery in the Niagara Peninsula before being cool-shipped to Tantalus' East Kelowna winery, where it was native fermented in 30% new French oak. After 10 months on lees, with partial malolactic fermentation and no bâtonnage, the result is a ripe, leesy style marked by sweet lemon, creamed corn, and a suave toasted wood spice. It is slightly richer and more generous than the regular BC Tantalus version. We are splitting hairs here, but if you know Puligny and Meursault, it is more like the latter. Yarra Valley, Victoria, AustraliaFrom south east Yarra's Tibooburra vineyard, this cooler site was planted in 2001 to this darker, more strucutral clone of syrah. It's well matched to the unusual soils: seams of black volcanic topsoil over yellow clay, with a smattering of granite. True to Lambert form, this was 80% whole bunch and native ferment, aged in neutral 5000L oak where it remained until bottling, unfined and unfiltered, and with its first sprinkling of sulphur. Purple florals, perfumed plum, wild blackberry, is scented with scrubby herbs and white pepper, while finely firm, sinewy tannins wrap around the medium bodied core. Swartland, Coastal Region, South AfricaDalkeith is a sister project to Jackson Family Wines' Capensis project in South Africa, a line entirely devoted to Chardonnay. Winemaker Graham Weerts gets to investigate other grapes, namely Syrah and Chenin Blanc, with Dalkeith. A close friendship with Adi Badenhorst kicked off this project, with Weerts sourcing Dalkeith's grapes from two of Adi's vineyards (Adi was Graham’s best man at his wedding, so we can safely assume the pedigree of fruit). This Syrah comes from Jakkalsfontein vineyard, was destemmed and cold soaked for 3 days before inoculation and another 10 days of ferment prior to pressing into older barrels for 9 months.
