Van Westen Vineyards V 2021

Naramata Bench, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThis is number 13 for V, the Van Westen five-grape Bordeaux blend. The 2020 mix is 45% merlot, 24% cabernet franc, 11% malbec, 9% cabernet sauvignon, and 11% petit verdot. It is a deeper, darker, more complex version of Voluptuous, although it is not a wine for long-term cellaring. The nose is Okanagan savoury, pitching dried sage and peppery notes into a mix of black cherries, sweet black plums and blueberries. It is dense yet soft, with only a bit of spice and tannin to overcome in the finish. It should be in its best place by 2027, but you can drink it now with a substantial protein for dinner. The fruit comes from four Naramata vineyards, all within two kilometres of the Van Westen winery: Home Lot, Boothe Road, Granite Ridge, and Salting.Tasted: 22 October 2024Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
