Château Pesquié Artemia 2021

Ventoux, Southern Rhone, Rhone Valley, FranceOver the last three decades, Ventoux has emerged from the shadows to become a respected Rhône appellation, and no one has done more globally to enhance that reputation than the multi-generational Chaudière family. Now, under the direction of brothers Paul and Fred Chaudière, with the help of many hands, they farm 100 hectares on the slopes of Mont Ventoux, where the vines are grown organically and certified Demeter biodynamic. The cuvée comes off two sloping sites: a grenache vineyard on a small patch of stony limestone 400+ metres above sea level and the syrah vineyard clinging to the hillside at 340 meters on alluvial soils. Yields are wonderfully low from 20-25hl/ha, resulting in highly concentrated wines. The fruit is fermented in oak vats and aged 18 months in 1/3 600 litre oak barrels, 1/3 smaller French oak barriques, and the remainder in concrete. The blend of 80/20 syrah/grenache gets your immediate attention. The syrah is more Northern Rhône than Southern, pitching vibrant red and black fruit dusted in garrigue, white pepper, and bacon. Young and fresh, this is going nowhere for the next five to six years, expanding all the while in the bottle. Look for this in private wine shops only. Presumably, it offers too much value for money sold in government stores.Tasted: 06 October 2024Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
