Château Pesquié Artemia 2019
Ventoux, Southern Rhone, Rhone Valley, FranceOver the last thirty years, Ventoux has emerged from the shadows and is considered one of the better appellations in the Rhone. It all begins with soils rich in limestone and the dedication of the Chaudiere family, now under the direction of brothers Paul and Fred. The brothers farm the 100-hectare site organically with the help of many hands. The cuvée comes off two sloping sites: a grenache vineyard on stony limestone 400+ metres above sea level. In contrast, the syrah vineyard clings to the hillside at 340 meters on alluvial soils. Yields are wonderfully low from 20-25hl/ha, resulting in highly concentrated wines. The fruit is fermented in oak vats and aged 50 percent new French oak barrels for 18 months. The blend is 75/25 syrah and grenache, which grabs your attention from the opening sip. Vibrant black fruits dusted in garrigue, white pepper and bacon. It takes us north toward the Hermitage style, suggesting it has nothing but time on its hands in the bottle. Impressive. The Pesquie wines, except the Terrasses Rouge, are sporadically sold in better private wine shops in B.C. Why they are not widely available in government stores joins many mysteries about how wines are listed in B.C.Tasted: 16 March 2022Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:BC | $54.99 | 750ml | select private retailers |
