CheckMate Artisanal Winery Silent Bishop Merlot 2021
Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaSilent Bishop accentuates the vagaries of its south Okanagan site, the cooler western benches under Mount Kobau, namely Oliver North, Golden Mile, and Osoyoos West, between 313 and 400m. The gentle early morning sun kicks off long days at 49 degrees north, beginning as early as 5am all summer. The sun slips behind Kobau in the late afternoon, allowing the grapes to escape any late day baking. The organic fruit is wild fermented and gets extended skin contact before ageing in French oak barrels for 20 months. The freshness of the Western side is reflected in its red currants, raspberries scents. The palate is plush but with sticky tannins, black cherries, and blackcurrant, with a smoky, resiny, dry finish.
