Quails' Gate Chardonnay Rosemary's Block 2021
West Kelowna, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaRosemary’s Block Chardonnay sits on the north side of Boucherie Road, just above the winery proper on a steep slope of an ancient volcano. The West Kelowna wine was named after Rosemary Stewart, the family matriarch throughout the latter half of the 20th Century. The winemaking is precise but straightforward, beginning with handpicked grapes that are whole cluster pressed and barrel fermented in a mix of new and neutral French oak for ten months. It goes through complete malolactic fermentation and gets regular bâtonnage throughout. The nose celebrates lemon zest and pears with a whiff of fresh buttered croissant. On the palate, it remains svelte and lengthy with a run of minerals heightened by a line of acid that speaks Okanagan. My experience is that this wine ages gracefully, and will effortlessly age 7-10 years. The final piece of the puzzle is that this is a terrific wine for the dinner table. The vines, clones 76 and 809, were planted in 1997 on a 1.41-acre block in silty clay, sandy loam soil at 420m–433m above sea level.Tasted: 10 July 2023Tasted by: Prices:BC | $60.00 | 750ml | winery direct, wine club members |
