Catena Zapata Malbec Nicasia Vineyard 2019

San Carlos, Central Region, Mendoza, ArgentinaThe Nicasia Malbec, first released in 2004, is another precise selection of vines from the best historic rows of the Catena’s estate vineyards. Carefully hand tended to produce meagre yields, the high-altitude (1100 metres) fruit grown on sandy soils is fermented in new French oak barriques and aged 18 months in new French oak. The quantities are tiny. Look for a dark purple colour on the edge. The nose is awash in ripe red and black currents, raspberries, and dried plums, wrapped in French oak and sweet, dense tannins. Complex and brooding, this wine will need a decade to reach its high mark despite an already creamy palate with sweet blueberries, cassis, vanilla and baking spices. Best now with more decadent foods such as shiitake mushrooms, beef tenderloin, and lamb chops.Tasted: 24 February 2023Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
