The Chocolate Block 2021

Swartland, Coastal Region, South AfricaThis is a much different wine than I remember from years back. It's perfumed and elegant, with a beautiful freshness to the fruit. A Swartland blend of syrah (74%), grenache (10%), cinsault (8%), cabernet sauvignon (7%), and viognier (1%), this offers wild brambles, blueberries, and dark cherries, lifted by fragrant lavender alongside sweet herbs, white pepper, and graphite. There's a complexity here that keeps pulling you back to the glass, with a clear ripeness to the lush fruit. Yet it's still vibrant and impeccably balanced, with polished, fine tannins that make this easy to open now, but with the fruit concentration to reward cellaring over the next 4-6 years. Recommended and good value at this price.Tasted: 28 January 2023Tasted by: Geoffrey Moss MWPrices:
