The Chocolate Block 2020

Swartland, Coastal Region, South AfricaBoekenhoutskoof was established 1776, and today, overseen by the talented maverick winemaker Marc Kent, they are still kicking off great things, like the behemoth that is Chocolate Block, known in markets the world over, thanks to its 500,000 bottles/year. The wine has smartened much over the years, becoming much more serious, whilst still being a friendly, welcoming pour upon release. The 2020 blends 73% syrah, 11% grenache, 8% cinsault, 7% cabernet sauvignon, 1% viognier. Quite a bit comes from Swartland's Porseleinberg, arguably one of the top sites for syrah in ZA. The cushy mouthfeel opens with dark chocolate and blackberry before moving into bitter black cherry, wrapped with soft tannins, and finishing with a thorny snap. One for drinking now, preferably with grilled steaks.Tasted: 17 December 2022Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
