Gérard Bertrand L'Hospitalitas 2018

La Clape, Coteaux du Languedoc, Languedoc, Sud de France, FranceIn the Middle Ages, l'Hospitalitas was a place of refuge for pilgrims, protected from fierce winds and the punishing summer sun by a high cliff. Today, Chateau l'Hospitalet occupies the La Clape spot, with the biodynamically farmed, coastal vineyard planted on the site's marls, chalks and limestones. The Hospitalitas plot is located at the foot of the cliff and is planted to syrah and mourvèdre. The syrah is partially carbonic, while the remainder of the grapes are traditionally vinified, with the blend happening before the wine heads to oak barrels for one year's ageing. The wine was bottled without fining or filtration and then rested for one more year before release. Highly perfumed, with ample fragrant violets, crushed blackberries, cherry jam, wild thorns, Mediterranean scrub flooding the full, cushy palate, with softly grippy, ample tannins housing this to a warming, exotically spiced and cracked black pepper finish. This is a giant wine still, dense and compact, and best taken alongside herb roast lamb.Tasted: 19 November 2021Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
