Clos du Soleil Signature 2018

British Columbia, CanadaThis year's Signature, the winery's aptly named flagship blend, puts merlot into the lead (42%), followed by cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, malbec, and petit verdot, all from the Similkameen. Each block was harvested separately, destemmed and native fermented in concrete before moving to French oak for 16 months ageing. Ample smokiness pervades this year's Signature, with smoked meats, camp smoke, bacon fat hazing the plump blackberry, savoury black cherry coating the full palate. There are scents of scrubby sage and dried violets darting throughout this powerhouse, all housed with big, toasty cedar tannins, and finishing with a sticky kirsch flush. Curious if the wildfires had any effect here, as I'm not getting the elegance of 2017.Tasted: 06 May 2021Tasted by: Prices:
