Mamete Prevostini Nebbiolo Botonero 2018
Valtellina, Lombardy, ItalyAlpi means Alps, the mountanous chain in the North of Italy. Retiche means Rheatic, the portion of the Alps in Valtellina close to the Swiss border. The Prevostini family planted vines here more than 70 years ago, and still are hands-on in the vineyards and winery. The appellation IGT Alpi Retiche indicates that these nebbiolo (called chiavennasca locally) grapes come from terraced vineyards in the province of Sondrio. From altitudes up to 700m and a mix of sand, silt, limestone, and granite soils, this was done entirely in stainless, where it remained for 8 months post-ferment. Here you are seeing nebbiolo naked, as it were, without the structuring cloak of oak. Though, certainly if any grape has the intrinsic structure and tannins to stand rigid without oak, nebbiolo would be it. Black cherry, wild cassis, medicinal red currant, perfumed wild strawberry, rose petals stream through the pure, slender, medium-bodied palate, propped by firm, tightly grippy tannins. Acidity is alpine brisk, and the finish lingers.
