Tuscany, ItalySan Fabiano Calcinaia is family owned since 1983. They have 165ha, with 46ha vineyards, all organically farmed since 2012. Calcinaia refers to the main soil of the estate = calcareous clays. From 250-500m, this is a blend of 90% sangiovese, 5% colorino, and 5% malvasia nera, native fermented and with 12 months in 2nd use 500L French oak barrels. Ripe raspberry, cherry, with ample hard tannins; this is somewhat clamped/closed down at this stage. The palate is quite compact through the bitter-edged finish.Tasted: 16 February 2021Tasted by: Prices:
Tuscany, ItalySangiovese is tipped with canaiolo and colorino in this simple, rustic Chianti Classico. Tannins are ample and hard-edged, leaving a bitter ring around the already bitter Italian cherry and prune plum fruit. The finish is short and abrupt, and warmer than the 13.5 degrees should suggest. Requires equally rustic foods (lasagne, spaghetti) to match.Tasted: 24 May 2020Tasted by: Prices:
