Gérard Bertrand Cigalus Rouge 2017
Sud de France, France`Domaine Cigalus enjoys a hot, sunny, semi-arid Mediterranean climate. Still, very deep soils deposited by an old river bed create a place to store the winter rains that keep the vines alive all summer. The site is planted to cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot, syrah, grenache, and caladoc, and is farmed biodynamically under the appellation IGP Aude Hauterive. The syrah and carignan are vinified separately as whole berries in a carbonic maceration. Other varieties are destemmed and vinified traditionally with 20 days of skin contact. Everything goes into 225-litre new French oak barrels for 12 months. There no magic blend or formula, but 15-20 possibilities that could end up in the final mix. I love the intensity and the smoky licorice, cigar, black cherry, curry aromas. The attack is foursquare, but with a touch of grace, the palate juicy and savoury with more minty, black cherry, black raspberry fruit held firm by just enough underlying acidity—no rush to open this bottle. You could cellar this wine for a decade and beyond; it will only get better.Tasted: 23 April 2019Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:BC | $54.99 | 750ml | estimated retail price |
