Fonseca Vintage Port 1977
Douro Valley, Northern Portugal, PortugalIt’s been some time since I first saw this wine, back in the 1980s. Fonseca Vintage Port is wine that often gains ground on its bigger, richer, drier, competitors in the bottle where its adds complexity over the decades. At this point, 40 years down the road, its just awakening as it reaches perfect harmony between its once boisterous fruit and its rich firm tannins, now mostly dissipated, save for a minimal structural element. This wine is now a marriage of nuances: floral, liquorice, mineral, black fruits, chocolate, tobacco and more, with great persistence and is near perfect. Despite the years that have passed, it retains some of its highly attractive lushness that caused Robert Parker to once refer to Fonseca as the Pomerol of vintage ports. One of the best of the vintage and wine that will still be relevant in 2050.Tasted: 23 March 2018Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:BC | $429.99 | 750ml | Liberty Wine Merchant |
