Fonseca Vintage Port 2003
Douro Valley, Northern Portugal, PortugalAnother wet winter is behind the success of this wine, followed by a late May flowering, a hot August, followed by pre-harvest rains, all setting up for a fine vintage port recipe. At the fifteen-year mark it is only beginning to shed that youthful puppy fat that makes Fonseca so drinkable. It’s still voluptuous in texture, and there is plenty of power, but the showy fruit is beginning to back off. Look for black cherry, licorice, spicy, citrus peel, with bits of chocolate on the nose. The tannins are backing off too, merely supporting its fiery, spicy, licorice root, black cherry jam, orange compote, mineral, chocolate flavours. The 2003 is sipping into the classic port mode. No rush here but you can put it on the drink list beginning in 2020.Tasted: 23 March 2018Tasted by: Prices:BC | $131.99 | 750ml | |
