Casa Lapostolle Clos Apalta 2010

Apalta Valley, Santa Cruz, Valle del Colchagua, Valle del Rapel, Region del Valle Central, ChileIf only all carmenère tasted like Clos Apalta. The mix is 71/18/11 carménère, cabernet sauvignon and merlot. Over the years this wine has quietly, en Française, become more and more sophisticated. It is always ripe in that warm Colchagua way but with bits of pepper, figs, and red and black fruits and no herbaceous notes it is really hitting its stride. Texture is a red wine's best friend and this baby has a bucket full. We love the weight and freshness and the wealth of fine-grained tannin. Roast lamb is the ticket here. Well done. Oh, and the carmenère and cabernet sauvignon vines are pre-phylloxera planted in 1920 and are grown using a mix of organic and biodynamic farming methods. Should live for ten to fifteen years easily. Vintage 2010 was a challenge. Cool start, cool parts, and then the world's fifth largest earthquake ever recorded. The delay, as it turns out, really helps the wine reach full maturity. Macerations last four to five weeks before Clos Apalta is racked into 100 per cent new, small French oak barrels by gravity. Malolactic fermentation happens in barrels, where the wine sits for 24 months. Tasted: 08 March 2014Tasted by: Anthony Gismondi and Stuart TobePrices:
