Joseph Phelps Insignia 2009

Napa Valley, California, United StatesThe 09 Insignia was great in 2012 and even better in late 2013. Blending several sites and grapes the varietal mix is 83/13/4 cabernet sauvignon, petit verdot and malbec from several Napa Valley sites: Stags Leap District, St. Helena, Napa Valley and Oak Knoll District. The ferment takes place over 40 days before the wine spends two years in new French oak. The colour is almost opaque with a rich sweet spice nose of blueberries and black fruits. The attack is surprisingly supple for its youth, the tannins slippery and long, the flavours of berry fruits flecked with cool floral mineral menthol aspects that add complexity and length. Hedonistic rich and powerful it's everything the Montrose and Cullen were not. This requires another decade to fully reach its considerable peak.
