Penfolds Grange Bin 95 Shiraz 2005
South Australia, AustraliaTypically dark colour with a cool nose of red fruit aromas of cranberry mix with garrigue and spice and plenty of new American oak. At this early stage the '05 Grange is a mix of flavours including blackberry grilled meat and spicy sweet dark plums with a healthy dose of rich, small-grained tannins. The grape mix in '05 is just under 96% shiraz and a touch less than 4% cabernet sauvignon from the Barossa Valley (including substantial proportion of Kalimna Shiraz), McLaren Vale and Coonawarra. This needs a decade to find its feet and ultimate direction but will it go the distance? A solid vintage that is somewhat unlucky to be stuck between the blockbuster years of 2004 and the 2006.
